Sad day as Niall Cantrell passes away

Niall Cantrell RIP

Niall Cantrell RIP

Niall Cantrell, former sports editor of the Limerick Post, colleague and a man who was a great friend to many, has passed away following a short illness. The rugby community as a whole will be shocked on his passing as Niall was a stalwart amongst both codes of the rugby world through his work with Old Crescent and his more recent association with the Treaty City Titans and Rugby League Ireland.

As executive director of the RLI, Niall worked tirelessly at the forefront of the association and its promotion, as the squad and backroom staff prepared for the recent World Cup. His organisational skills, attention to detail and efforts in travelling to the proposed team camps ensured that the entire squad had the best of facilities available to them for the course of the tournament - a tournament that he would eventually miss following his brief illness.

The RLI website had the following statement;

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of RLI Executive Director Niall Cantrell pictured above [Image - RLI website]. RLI would like to extend our deepest sympathies to all Niall's family and friends during these difficult times and to thank Niall for all the hard work he has put in for RLI particularly during the last year while at the helm.
Niall took over as Executive Director a year ago and has been tireless in his efforts to make the organisation a success with his focus being the World Cup. Niall went to Australia several times to get preparations and contacts in place for the tournament. Niall has also been at the forefront of the domestic competition for several years with the Treaty City Titan's.

Ni Neart go cur le cheile.

At 59, Niall's love of life, the outdoors and his proud associations and traditions in the sporting world will remain as the lasting memories and stories that we have of a good friend and colleague.

Niall is pre-deceased by his wife Linda and is survived by his son Bevan and daughters Keely and Sarah Jane

With deepest sympathy
