New corporate identity for IRFU

The new IRFU logo which was launched today
The IRFU today launched a new logo. Don't really see much of a difference although it does look like it has been changed with the new jersey in mind. The last time a company paid for a new Shamrock it all started to go down hill. However, the IRFU are better run than Aer Lingus so here's hoping. The official speil from the corporate men is below the fold.
Work, Rest, Play….Sport?

Whether it’s a collar worn turned up Cantona style; that guy who always gives an over enthusiastic post goal celebration at indoor soccer; the person on your tag rugby team who thinks they should have received a Lions call up, or the scores of us who will dust off our tennis rackets over the coming weeks; let’s face it, we are all a little bit inspired by our sporting heroes.
And this summer, Mars is making it easier for Irish people to not just watch their heroes on the box, but to actually get out and be just like their heroes, and enjoy an active summer of sport, by giving away €20,000 worth of Lifestyle sports vouchers.
The “Mars Summer of Sport” campaign was launched today by Leinster’s Heineken Cup winner Shane Horgan, Irish International Stephen Hunt and last year’s Young Footballer of the Year, Kerry’s Tommy Walsh.
All three sports stars admitted they were hugely influenced by their own sporting heroes, despite them not being from their own codes.
“Just like Star (Kieran Donaghy) I also played a lot of basketball when I was younger, and there was no one to match Michael Jordan,” said Walsh. “Watching him really inspired me to get out there with the basketball and practice, and of course like all young lads I was always decked out in the latest Air Jordan gear as well.”
Horgan’s sporting hero, like many modern athletes, was Muhammad Ali, while Stephen Hunt, a huge Waterford hurling fan, admits he had lots of sporting inspiration as a child, from Déise legend Tony Browne, to tennis bad boy John McEnroe.
“But I guess when I started playing soccer with a bit of intent, there was only one hero for me and that was Roy Keane”, said Hunt. “I would have loved to have had the opportunity to play alongside him. He is a legend.”
One thing the players all agree on, is that it’s not the sporting hero or the game that matters, it’s the inspiration it gives people to get out and be active that is important.
“It really doesn’t matter where the inspiration comes from, nothing beats getting out there and either taking part in a sport, or just going for a run, a walk or a swim; whatever takes your fancy,” said Horgan. “It’s a lot more fun to get out and get active yourself rather than just watching us lot on a pitch, and it’s great that Mars is making it easy for people to get equipped and get out there this summer.”
“Like everyone else, as soon as Wimbledon hit our TV screens each year my friends and I would root out our tennis rackets and become our centre court heroes for the summer months,” said Eavan Hayes, Mars Brand Manager. “This campaign is about reminding people how good it actually feels to get out and be active regardless of what level that’s at – it’s having some active fun that’s the important thing. By giving people the chance to win €20,000 worth of sports vouchers we hope to equip everyone to get moving. It could just be a pair of trainers for your daily walk with your friends or some high tech running apparel to achieve your marathon dream, or if you are like me, a new tennis racket so you are equipped when that Wimbledon fever hits again!”
The Mars Summer of Sport campaign gets underway today with €20,000 worth of Lifestyle sports vouchers, in denominations from €20 to €500 to be won. All people have to do to be in with a chance to win is to text MARS to 51500

Could this be the Ireland rugby kit of the future?
It may be a mock-up or a digitally enhanced piece of creative Photoshop work, but with the Canterbury deal supposedly on rocky ground, could this be the gear of the future for the Irish rugby team should PUMA sign on the dotted line? That is to say if they have not already done so. Equally so, notions of talk and expressions of interest were muted that Adidas, Munster's current kit sponsor were supposed to through their hat in the ring but nothing has emerged through the channels regarding their confirmed or denied interest.
Anyway, here's the PUMA version of what's doing the rounds of late.

Could this be PUMA's version of the Irish rugby jersey?
Ibanez to retire and three others leave Wasps

Raphael Ibanez retired from the professional game of rugby today, February 17, his birthday.
Wasps captain Ibanez to hang up his boots
London Wasps captain Raphael Ibanez has today (Tuesday February 17) announced his retirement from club rugby with immediate effect. Following a period of rest and recuperation after a series of complex concussions, Ibanez has been forced to end his career on medical grounds.
Sustaining an initial concussion against Worcester Warriors in September 2008, Ibanez suffered further head injuries against Leinster in Dublin and Sale at Adams Park earlier this season and has since undergone a number of investigations whilst completing a recommended two month period of rest. Subsequently Ibanez has attempted to gradually integrate back into training however he is still symptomatic when undertaking physical exertion. Following a reassessment by London Wasps neurosurgeon and neurologist last week the decision has been made by the medical team, coaches and Ibanez to stop playing with immediate effect as the risk of serious injury are too great to warrant an attempt to play again.
Making the announcement today, on his 36th birthday, Ibanez who joined the club in 2005, has enjoyed great success as part of the Wasps outfit successfully collecting silverware in every competition since his arrival. Appointed club captain at the beginning of the 2008/09 season, Ibanez will continue his involvement with the club working with the coaches and players this season as they drive their ambition for Guinness Premiership honours.
Adding to the retirement of Ibanez, Londo Wasps also announced that Riki Flutey, James Haskell and Tom Palmer will depart the club at the end of the 2008/09 season. Flutey will join Brive while Haskell and Palmer will make the move to Parisian side, Stade Francais.
On confirmation of the news, London Wasps Director of Rugby, Ian McGeechan, said, “As ever at this time of the year thoughts shift to next season our focus is still our current Guinness Premiership campaign. With much still to play for and all eyes on a top four spot these players, along with the full squad, will be looking to drive Wasps forward before attention shifts to the 2009/10 season.
“All three of these players have enjoyed great success as a part of the club, on both the European and domestic stage as well as the international arena. Since their arrival and through our Academy and development structure we have seen them flourish and that reiterates the great structures in place at the club. We wish Riki, James and Tom well in the next stage of their career.”
He added on the ongoing contract negotiations, “We are very happy with how we are progressing through the negotiation period. Positive steps have been made with all of our players and we are now very close to securing our full contingent.”
The news of three English talents heading to France has raised speculation over the current rugby climate as French clubs, not impeded by salary caps or financial backing, seemingly have the ability to lure players to Europe. On the news today, London Wasps Executive Chairman Mark Rigby said; “It does raise great concern that French clubs can now blow the English clubs away when it comes to salaries and it is clear that in financial terms we are no longer on a level playing field. There is a wider concern that the development of English rugby players will only be hampered as they move away from the Guinness Premiership, which stands as the best domestic league in the Northern Hemisphere, and regular head to head competition.”
SA Rugby denies Magners League link
Munster will not play the likes of the Lions, the Cheetahs, the Bulls or the Sharks according to the latest blast of news received to the Limerick Post Sports blog.
News in from the South African Rugby board slams the European link to the Magners link. Here's what they had to say today.
SA Rugby acting managing director Andy Marinos emphatically quashed rumours that South African rugby was contemplating ending its involvement in Vodacom Super 14 to join the European-based Magners League.
Four Limerick players get the call up to international club duty
36-Man AIB Club International Squad Announced
FOUR players from AIB League clubs in Limerick are set to line out for Ireland when this year’s AIB Club International takes place in Donnybrook against England on Friday, 27th February. Shannon’s Tadgh Bennett and Fionn McLoughlin, Young Munster’s Derek Corcoran and UL Bohemians’ Ed Torries, have all been included in a 36-man AIB Club International squad.
The recommendations of the club coaches and selection advisors were then narrowed down by the Ireland Management team of, Coach Brian Walsh of Cork Constitution and his assistant Brian Hyland of UCC. The team will be managed this year by Donal Brennan.
Commenting on the game, Ireland coach Brain Walsh said: “We have introduced a number of new faces to this year’s squad and hopefully that will bring the same sort of enthusiasm and the same results that we had last year and in previous years.
Do we know anything about rugby? Week 2 results

A tough affair this week in our fantasy world as plenty of positives and negatives could be taken form the results just in.
The weekend held our league leader in top spot following an additional 61 points scored from the round. Notable inclusions to Mac One led under the guidance of Martin MacNamara, Asbis, saw Andy Goode move to the bench in favour of Beauxis and the call up for try scorer Tommy Bowe to the first 15. Mac also had a try from Wallace to give him the narrowest of margins at the top of the table over close rival Andrew Carey and the graduates.
Making just two changes to his team, Carey matched his 67 points of last week with the same score this week and moved three places to second and thus ousting Huw ap Rhys by a single point who is surely regretting dropping, double try scorer and man of the match, Luke Fitzgerald and his 18 points, from his team.
Limerick Post's Donn O'Sullivan (5th), his brother Eoin at 02 (9th), John Callanan, Musgrave Food Services, (7th) and Limerick Leader's Colm Kinsella (10th), also dropped places from a week that did not yield as many fantasy league points for them.
With a week off, many managers will return to their respective fantasy camps for a preparatory assessment of their teams and plan for a return on the 28th of the month.
The standings are as follows:
Martin MacNamara, Mac One, 5 tries, 7 assists, 135 total pts
Andrew Carey, The graduates, 6 tries, 5 assists, 134 total pts
Huw ap Rhys, Huwge Tackle, 5 tries, 5 assists, 133 total pts
David Shaw, Dave's Dreamers, 3 tries, 7 assists, 125 total pts
Donn O Sullivan, Hard as Earls XV, 2 tries, 7 assists, 125 total pts
