SET aside your evening of Saturday May 26 for a bohemian get together at Belltable for Limerick Writers Centre. The wine reception will magnetise at 8pm, moving on to 8.30pm sit-down for entertainment of a stimulating kind. A theme of identity is invoked by the various elements, first by writer/ lecturer Gerard Hanberry’s slide show and talk on Oscar Wilde. A year ago the Galway based Hanberry brought out his book ‘More Lives Than One: the Remarkable Wilde Family through the Generations’, through Collins Press.
GIVEN the relationship between Dolan's Warehouse, Dock Road and La Boutique and now Dynamique gay discos, it is fitting venue for the 2012 return of 'Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens'. Directed by Myles Breen, it is musical theatre seared with social insight, delivered through verse and song. The production is a joint one between Bottom Dog Theatre Company and Music Theatre West as it requires 19 actors and four professional singer/ performers to deliver its life stories, beautifully. "We are blessed with the talent we have, a whole bunch of Limerick actors and singers, actors such as Zeb Moore, Peter Hayes, Róisin Connolly and Ann Blake," Myles Breen feels. "Our singers are Brian McCann, who made it big in the West End with 'Phantom of the Opera' and 'The Rocky Horror Show'.
FETED by The Rubberbandits when launched in July last year, The Horse Outside at The Hunt Museum has proved to be a smash attraction. This elegant 8' fibreglass equine is a colourful riot of themes linked to The Hunt Collection, and created by children and teenagers from Regeneration areas. It's a beautiful work, connecting those on the project with works of art and history in the Hunt Collection. Stabled for the winter at the museum, soon The Horse Outside will be out to 'graze' with the 2nd Horse Outside, thanks to this year's voluntary scheme with Southill Outreach and Limerick Youth Service. At least eight children are involved, three of whom have worked on previous projects under the working title of Limerick Corridor Art.
THE country's first full scale theatrical production inspired by hurling, the nation's game, is coming to UCH on Friday May 25, 8pm. 'The ALL STAR Wars' is a comedy with an original score and cast of ten playing a multiplicty of characters. Described as "D'unbelievables meets Monty Python meets 'The Wizard of Oz'", it has sold out three weeks in Waterford and toured from The Olympia to Cork Opera House. This year it returns by demand to several venues.
THEATRE nights are standard for some and a distant call for others. The barriers can be childcare, finance, the commute or plain not giving a fiddler’s. So any one for a light lunch in a top class restaurant, and a stage show too? Pencil out the last Thursday and Friday of each month for an hour in The Savoy Hotel, Henry Street because ‘Lunchtime Theatre at The Savoy’ is beginning. Attend to ‘The Candidate’ this Thursday April 26 and Friday 27 at 12.45pm in The Market Restaurant of The Savoy. Soup and a sandwich will be served, all for a tenner.
