WE Irish have the unfortunate distinction of being world class when it comes to the level of asthma in our community. One in eight people is affected and we come fourth in world rankings of asthma per capita. Asthma Awareness Week began on Monday April 30 and Shaws department stores are encouraging those who suffer from asthma symptoms to try out their recently introduced SleepAngel™ pillows. SleepAngel has received consistently positive reports from customers with night time asthma symptoms.
PIETA House is to be the beneficiary from a Coffee ‘n’ Cupcakes morning at the Hunt Museum on Friday, Apri 27, as well as a unique on-line auction with the tempting prize of a lavish home-cooked meal for six. The fund raisers are the brainchild of Helena Moloney, who promises a fun-filled morning at the Hunt Museum with an abundance of valuable perks on offer, including weekend breaks, dinner vouchers, etc. Admission is free, but donations will be greatly accepted for Pieta House, the centre for the prevention of self-harm and suicide, based in Mungret.
A NATIONAL campaign to raise awareness of depression and the prevention of suicide is focusing on male vulnerability. ‘Men on the Ropes’ originated with Samaritans in the UK, an initiative driven by how appropriate the expression ‘Men on the Ropes’ is in times of crisis, and that men are four times more likely to commit suicide than women. Poster boy for the campaign is a boxer in real life who, suffering from depression, went to Samaritans for help. The connection with the 24/7 listening and befriending service worked and “this poster is one that men can relate to,”
WE are fast approaching the time of year when Junior and Transition year students are forced to make decisions about subject choice for the Leaving Certificate. Often subjects clash on the timetable or particular subjects such as Applied Maths, Agricultural Science or even Physics may not be offered at all in school.
